Fancy Wood Lettering

January 21st, 2014

I’ve always been a little obsessed with wood.  As a child growing up, I would watch my dad create amazing things all the time – from picture frames to climbing frames – I have always been in awe of his patience and skill and the textures and smells and colours that come from such a simple material. Nowadays almost everything I design for work is eventually digitally printed onto books and packaging and I don’t often get to play with different materials. So it was a real treat to be given a private commission which allowed me to experiment with a different method of producing my designs on a larger scale…

My client is a respected artist herself which perhaps made me put more pressure on myself to make something extra special. She gave me no brief except for this quote she likes and she asked me to make a piece of lettering in whatever material I wanted.

I had been dying to collaborate with this guy in Brighton who makes incredible furniture designs with wood marquetry and has worked on lots of varied projects for fancy clients (and humble artists!) The final result is this piece made from dark fumed oak and inlaid with maple and sycamore. The design was cut on a laser bed and then pieced together like a jigsaw and heat sealed.
